Embroidered Paperworks

Walking into school everyday it is impossible for me not to pause, engulfed in the presence of the huge oak tree on the lawn. I began taking photos as the seasons changed. No matter what was happening in my life or in the world, the tree remained beautiful and present; A reminder of humankind’s insignificance in the face of the natural world. Conversely the tree is exceptionally significant to the people who pass by or take a moment to sit under its branches. Seeing the tree slowly change over the course of a year, I reflected on my own growth as a student and felt a strange comfort in the inconsequence of my 21 years compared to the hundreds lived by the tree.
Inspired by the eclectic nature of English paper piece quilting, I used the handmade papers I made over the last two years to display my student work and depict the changing landscape. Cut paper and embroidery were utilized to create a highly worked surface that I hope is comparable to the intricate beauty of the tree itself.
